About TRC

Overview

Why We Exist

Technology Resource Connections was founded to empower the low to moderate income individuals in the Greater Richmond area to achieve career success by providing free or low-cost access to computer technology training and resources. The Metropolitan Business League was instrumental in developing the concept for TRC, and continuing contact with MBL provides valuable connections to the minority business community. Lynda Sharp Anderson, former MBL Executive Director, is a current officer on TRC's board of directors.

TRC defines its target audience as those who lack the financial resources to purchase computers, to pay for career-oriented training, or to afford access to the Internet. This population has little or no computer skills and may be hesitant to seek training from traditional organizations. Such individuals are frequently underemployed – they are capable of employment at positions providing higher income, but lack the computer skills needed to seek and obtain those positions.

What We Do

TRC's overarching goal is to bridge the digital divide that is often a significant barrier to professional and economic success. Our program is designed to produce a high level of competence – not just familiarity – with the most commonly used software packages in order to increase employability and advancement in today's competitive business environment.

In addition to subsidizing fees for technology classes, TRC provides volunteer mentors who not only reinforce new computer skills, but also encourage students' career plans. As participants adapt to classroom instruction and the learning process, they are encouraged to pursue additional educational opportunities. A future goal of TRC is to assist clients in securing their own home computers and internet access in order to practice skills learned in classes and to participate in the contemporary world of readily available information and communication.

TRC also offers assistance to small business owners and non-profit partners that lack the resources to hire Information Technology personnel and purchase or upgrade hardware and software to ensure ongoing efficiency and effectiveness in data management. TRC staff and volunteer IT professionals work with small business owners to assess technology needs, recommend solutions and help them connect with TRC's community partners.

Who We Serve

TRC is currently focused on serving residents and small business owners in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood, public housing residents in the City of Richmond, and non-profit partners in the Greater Richmond area.
